![]() Grade School Teachers Expressing Their Political and Religious Beliefs to Grade School ChildrenBy: Anonymous Parent
October 21, 2010
I am a teacher and have a very strict policy regarding politics. I never tell the students my political affiliation. When teaching government and politics, I make it a point to present all sides and play devil's advocate. I've had kids ask me who I vote for, etc. I always respond by saying, "My job is to educate you, not indoctrinate you. If you can guess my political affiliation, then I haven't done my job properly." A grade school child of mine was exposed to anti Obama opinions expressed as factual by an Orting teacher. Teachers, please keep your religious and political opinions to yourself. And if you exercise your free speech right regarding politics or religion you should have enough respect for the beliefs and opinions of all people and ensure your students understand these are your opinions and that others may feel differently. Especially when you’re expressing advanced political views with grade school children that do not understand your personal political agenda. I happen to a patriot and staunch supporter of our President and have taught my children to learn about, respect, and admire our President. Bashing our President in front of grade school children that have not formed their own opinions about our President is cowardly, and just plain wrong.

I applaud your classroom policy, but I have occasionally had to "re-educate" my children from the liberal mindset they come home with from our school system. Also, I'd just like to point out that being a patriot, and supporting the policies of our current president are not mutually exclusive. I, too am a patriot, and while I respect the Office of the Presidency, I often struggle with the choices this President has made.

I agree that teachers should not indoctrinate children with their political views. However, I have found that the majority of teachers that do this are more liberal than than moderate or conservative. They should all adopt your policy.
