The Lure of a Good Golf CartBy: Lyle Evansiano
March 26, 2010
Like many of you, I've gone from honoring politics to placing it in the realm of bad but entertaining theater. More akin to a movie being released to a DVD instead of making it to the big screen.
Let me explain... With recent trials and toils over Obamacare, Attorneys general lawsuits, all the people that voted for "HOPE" and "CHANGE" suddenly realizing they're getting the latter spoon fed to them whether they like it or not, the national news attention Orting received with its ground-breaking, emission savings, quieter commutes via Golf Carts on our city streets is starting to show some activity. Now, never mind the City Councilman who pushed for this luxury of a lifetime was one of two people to apply for a permit months after its passage, and that countless city dollars in time expense, the printing of those fancy permit numbers, the 'rules' of Golf Cart Driving in "Golf Cart Friendly' Orting, and all the back-slapping chatter this decision has developed. No, this is better than all that even as just yesterday! Word from Orting Police has it that on Thursday, March 25th, a Golf Cart was stolen and then taken for a "Joy Ride" and then crashed. The City Council must be proud that a Golf Cart has finally made it to the streets. The joy of successful community based decisions like this are, again, theater. While the Orting Police could not comment on much more than the fact that two arrests have been made and that they're still investigating, the very media that our Mayor - yes the same one who knew nothing about the recent Superintendent of Public Instruction driving drunk by our High School but was more than willing to grab the spotlight by saying she knew nothing - the internet, Facebook, and good old fashioned "I heard it walking the dog intelligence" shows us that the two arrests are reported to be two 13 year olds. Golf Carts on our City streets. The kids forgot to understand that the law required you be a licensed driver, and that the vehicle preferrably be something you owned or that the owners had given you permission. The City Council neglected to, um, understand the City. Now...onto those campaign promisess....

I also thought that only a licensed (through the Dept Of Licensing) veicle could be upon a state highway (as SR 162 is)!! Sorry Orting, but troopers (WSP) enforce state laws and not municipal codes. Just because it is legal on your streets doesn't mean that it is on a highway!! FYI..........
