Bird Flu (Avian Flu) Local Outbreaks-Monitor your backyard birds!
By: Patty Villa
January 22, 2015
The Washington State Department of Agriculture has issued a warning to all backyard and commercial poultry growers (chicken, duck, geese) to be on the lookout for signs of Avian Flu among your animals.
Avian Flu is extremely contagious and deadly among birds. It was found in a backyard flock of ducks, chickens, and geese just east of Port Angeles in Clallam County last weekend and also reported in Whatcom County.
You are asked to keep your birds protected as best you can from exposure to wild ducks and to sanitize your boots, etc if you've been in contact with other irds.
Backyard bird owners and commercial growers are urged to monitor their flocks closely and report sick or dead birds to WSDA Avian Health Program at (800) 606-3056 and learn what steps you may need to take.
An Avian Flu Workshop is being prepared by WSU and WSDA- check back with them for details as they become available.
