April 21, 2015
Orting High School (OHS) is a recipient of a Washington Achievement Award for their fourth consecutive year! This year they are being recognized for High Progress. That means OHS is in the top 10% of schools making the most progress in reading and math. “This reflects the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, families, and community partners,” said Dr. Marci Shepard, acting superintendent. Washington Achievement Award winners are selected using the State Board of Education Revised Achievement Index and are based on statewide assessment data for the three previous years. The award is given in six categories: Overall Excellence, High Progress, Reading Growth, Math Growth, Extended Graduation Rate and English Language Acquisition. Principal Ed Hatzenbeler congratulates his school saying, “In total, over the last four years, OHS has won seven of the last eight major awards for schools in Washington State!” OHS has previously received recognition for: High Progress, Closing the Achievement Gap, Improvement, Reading Growth and Extended Graduation Rate. In addition to four consecutive Washington Achievement Awards, OHS has been recognized as a School of Distinction by the Center for Educational Effectiveness for each of the last three years. John Miller, OHS teacher/ASB Advisor/National Honor Society Advisor, says he is proud but not surprised. “In everything we do, we set our standards to exceed what we accomplished the previous year. We have a culture of continuous improvement that the students own and lead.” The Orting School Board of Directors is presenting OHS with banners and fliers to hang in the school and community. OHS will also be recognized at an awards ceremony in Spanaway. Thank you for your partnership in preparing all students for college, careers, and life! Go Cardinals!
