Dear Orting School District Community: 2016 is off to a strong start with our School Board adopting, and in some cases, reaffirming, major pieces of work for our students, staff, and community partners. As your superintendent, and in concert with all stakeholders, I am leading the development of six strategic initiatives all in support of student achievement and effective operations. One of our important goals is to prepare our students to live as engaged citizens in a diverse, global society. We recently receive a significant honor that will provide our students the opportunity to participate in the democratic process and gain insight in to what makes our nation great. On Saturday, March 26, 2016, Orting School District will host a precinct Presidential Caucus at Orting Middle School. This is a great honor for our school district and community. Orting residents can expect an estimated 700 people to visit our beautiful and vibrant city. During this caucus, representatives from their political party will elect delegates to the presidential nominating convention. Hosting this key event in the presidential election process models civic engagement for Orting students. We are working with the appropriate state organizations to see if our AP Government students can observe the process as a learning opportunity. I also believe this is an opportunity to showcase our strong schools, supportive community, unique businesses, and civic pride. We have such a great community that provides a wonderful place for residents to work, play, learn and grow. In addition, as a public institution, hosting the caucus is an appropriate and valuable use of our public facilities. Our school facilities are supported by public tax dollars and Orting School District welcomes the use of them during non-school hours. Finally, as the major educational institution in our city, it is a great honor to host the presidential caucus and allow our community to fully participate in the democratic process. Sincerely, Marci Dr. Marci Shepard Superintendent |
