Get Ready- The Farmers Market is Coming!By: Patty Villa
February 07, 2013
We've talked about it, polled about it, and now here it comes... The Orting Valley Farmers Market is expected to arrive in June!
The Farmers Market will be held on Fridays from 3pm to 7 pm. The focus will be on farm fresh products - from produce and fruit, to meat and eggs. There will be baked goods and other edibles available as well as plants, vegetable starts, local hand made crafts, and more. Our intention is to provide the commuinity and commuters with an opportunity to stop and shop on their way home, or perhaps make a pic-nic in the park on a leisurely Friday night. This is also a chance to get to know the people that grow your food, find new recipes for preparing the in-season produce, meet with friends, and learn new things. We expect the market to grow with your support and attendance, so make sure to stop by and see what is being offered each week. Orting Valley Farmers Market has just started a new facebook page where you will find updates on vendors and activities at the market. We'll be posting our contest announcements and winners there too, so be sure to keep checking back. We will continue to accept applications for people interested in being vendors- just drop a line at ortingvalleyfarmersmarket@yahoo.com and let us know. If you'd like to be a part of this fun venture, contact us! We are looking for volunteers for all sorts of fun things. You decide the amount of time you'd like to spend or what area you'd like to help with and we'll hook you up! You are what determines a markets success. Your attendance and participation is what will make this market viable and grow. We look forward to serving our community, our farmers, and our local economy. And we look forward to seeing you at the market!

Hi Phillip- Thank you for your input. A lot of the farmers/growers will have product ready in June. Many growers plant much earlier than May, based on the items they are growing. There are also a number of growers who use greenhouses in our area, providing them additional time to grow. Those with plants/starts for home growers will have product ready as well. Strawberries are harvested in June, lettuces, and other products are available earlier than that. Thanks for your interest!

Hi papared. The market is on Fridays because that's what the community requested. We had a large response to community poll (via utility bills) making Friday the clear choice for market. Reverse commute, with lots of people going through town, as opposed to Saturday mornings, when there is much less traffic and competition from other markets. So, "Papared", be supportive and positive as this will be a different market than previously experienced. "Give Peas a Chance" !!

Who's lame brained idea was it to have the Farmers Market on Friday afternoon? What happened to Saturday and Sunday afternoon? Your doomed to failure, again.
