October 22, 2014
According to Roger Kiers, WSDOT representative, WSDOT is currently in the process of negotiating a Memorandum of Understanding with DAHP to formalize WSDOT’s plans for the McMillin Bridge. WSDOT is proposing that the MOU include the following Management Plan: A. WSDOT will leave the McMillin Bridge in place but remove it from operational service, while continuing to allow pedestrian access, as shown in the attached Site Plan. In order to remove the bridge from operational service, WSDOT will:
- remove the approach roadway pavement and hydroseed these areas
- construct a biofiltration swale at the north approach
- install bollards at both ends of the bridge to prevent vehicular use, and
- provide an access route for Pierce County to maintain the levee.
- WSDOT will maintain the McMillin Bridge in accordance with WSDOT policy.
- A safety inspection will be performed by the Bridge Preservation Office on a 24-month cycle. All bridge elements will be inspected and known deficiencies will be monitored.
- Repairs to the bridge will be prioritized and programmed as funding allows. Repair recommendations may include such items as removal of spalling concrete and pedestrian rail repair.
