Confusing IntersectionBy: Pat Carnahan
November 08, 2014
So having lived in Orting for a while I still find the intersection at Bridge St. S and Corrin Ave E not only confusing but dangerous. It is a traffic violation while traveling northbound on HWY 162 (Harman Way S.), if a left turn signal is not used to continue straight ahead onto Corrin Ave E. Most of us know this but if one is traveling southbound on Corrin at the Bridge St. stop, do we know if the vehicle traveling north is going to turn left or go straight, no. It would seem that a Do Not Enter sign and a curbed barrier allowing only enough space for southbound traffic to travel at the stop sign, would eliminate the guessing game.

In the scenario you pose, the vehicle you describe as traveling northbound on Harman (technically westbound sr-162 as even state routes are east/west routes) is not traveling "straight through the intersection" , but rather it's making a left turn onto Corrin as it must cross the centerline to do so. If it were to make a (from drivers perspective) left turn, it is actually making a u-turn because when it's at the apex of the turn, it is, for a brief moment, facing eastbound sr162 (WB to you)
